Nestled on the fringes of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Santa Lucia Guesthouse is a sanctuary of refined South African hospitality, offering an intimate gateway to the Elephant Coast’s untamed beauty.
Santa Lucia Guesthouse offers a relaxed base in the heart of St Lucia, surrounded by a subtropical garden full of shady trees, birdlife, and a swimming pool, perfect for resting, soaking up the sun, or simply enjoying the calm of the garden. The lodge has a calm and inviting atmosphere, where comfort meets simplicity, and the focus is on enjoying the surroundings at a gentle pace.
St Lucia itself sits within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first World Heritage Site. Rivers, estuaries, forests, and the Indian Ocean all come together in this unique area, creating an environment where wildlife is a natural part of daily life. Hippos are often heard in the estuary at night, and a variety of birds can be seen flitting through the garden.
The town is small and unhurried, with quiet streets, local shops, and cafés adding to its charm.
The guesthouse is run by the owners, Phillip and Eileen, who are known for creating a welcoming and attentive environment. South African born and now based in St Lucia, Eileen van der Merwe is a widely travelled, largely self-taught artist who works mainly in acrylics, along with pencil, charcoal, and watercolour pencil crayons.
Her art often features flowers, wildlife, and portraits, with a growing focus on capturing expression and character, adding a personal and creative touch to the lodge.
The rooms at Santa Lucia Guesthouse are comfortable and thoughtfully equipped, providing a calm retreat after days spent exploring.
Breakfast is freshly prepared each morning, and packages are available that combine safaris, birdwatching, estuary excursions, fishing trips, and visits to nearby Zulu villages. Each stay can be tailored to balance adventure and relaxation, offering easy access to the many experiences the area has to offer.
Wildlife and nature activities are right on the doorstep:
- Guided safaris reveal elephants, buffalo, and a wide variety of bird species.
- Boat trips on the estuary provide opportunities to spot hippos and crocodiles.
- For quieter moments, hiking trails, or relaxing by the pool offer a slower way to enjoy the surroundings.
- Cultural visits to nearby villages provide insight into Zulu traditions and crafts, adding depth to any stay.
